Inspector Gadget 2 (IG2) is a live-action comedy film, released directly to VHS and DVD in March 2003. It was based upon the cartoon series created by DiC Entertainment and is a direct-to-video sequel to the 1999 Walt Disney Pictures film Inspector Gadget and also released by DIC Entertainment. It was filmed in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

The second film departs slightly from the first one. Inspector Gadget and Dr. Claw are never referenced as John Brown and Sanford Scolex – their respective civilian names from the first movie, though Claw's communicator clearly is labeled "Scolex Industries", indicating that his name is still Sanford Scolex. In addition to this, none of the 1999 film's actors return to reprise their roles (with the exception of D. L. Hughley, who voices the Gadgetmobile). Also, Gadget's love interest from the first movie is gone and is replaced by G2. Gadget is more foolishly inept and unable to control his now glitch-ridden gadgets. As a homage to the original cartoon, Claw's face is never seen and speaks with a deep, gruff voice. In the previous film, Claw's face was visible and was an upper-class business man. He appears to be older in age then he was in the original, although the story only takes place a year later.

Plot

One year after the events of the previous film, Inspector Gadget (French Stewart) and Gadgetmobile (D.L. Hughley) struggle with a lack of crime in the city of Riverton, and constant glitches in Gadget's machinery. When Dr. Claw (Tony Martin) escapes from prison, Police Chief Chief Quimby and Mayor Wilson (Sigrid Thornton) unveil an upgraded female Gadget-type robot Gadget Model #2 (G2 for short) (Elaine Hendrix), to replace the malfunctioning Gadget. Gadget begins to fall in love with the new robot G2. Gadget is pulled off the Claw case in favor of G2.

Claw plans to steal 5 trillion dollars worth of gold from the Federal Reserve in Riverton. In addition to henchmen Brick (James Wardlaw) and McKible (John Batchelor), Claw recruits Squint (Nick Lawson), Jungle Bob (Mick Roughan), and The Ninja (Siros Niaros), at a bar called "The Blue Monkey." Gadget and his niece, Penny (Caitlin Wachs), go to the bar and cause a brawl, which is cleaned up by G2. Penny finds out that Claw is planning a heist at the Concentrated Industries warehouse, and tells Gadget and G2.

G2 stakes out the warehouse, and the henchmen break in to steal the first component of Claw's secret weapon. G2 almost foils the heist, but Gadget crashes into her and the criminals escape. A day later Gadget is given a tip to attend the science convention, where Brick and McKibble (disguised as nerds) plant a circuit override chip on Gadget's hat, allowing Claw to control Gadget. In the resulting chaos, Brick and McKibble steal a "protoid" laser from the science convention, but Brain grabs Brick's shoe. Chief Quimby fires Gadget for what happened and costing $100,000 in damages (During this Gadget accidently says he quits). Gadget tries to find a new job, but his glitches keep wrecking everything and gets fired as usual.

Penny continues her own investigation, which leads her to an abandoned ten pin bowling factory. Meanwhile Gadget ends up as a valet at a gala dinner, where Claw steals a 20 pound ruby on loan from the Rajah of India. G2 fails to stop Claw, so Chief Quimby deactivates G2. Claw and his henchmen return to their hideout where Penny is snooping around. Claw and his henchmen capture her, but Brain escapes and runs to get Gadget.

Gadget goes to the police department and reactivates G2. Brain arrives, and Gadget uses an experimental dog translator from the science convention in order to understand the dog. Brain informs Gadget that Claw has captured Penny.

Claw activates his secret weapon that freezes time in Riverton, allowing him and his henchmen to rob the Federal Reserve with ease. Gadget and G2 evade the weapon blast and confront Claw in the midst of the robbery. Claw escapes and orders his henchmen to hold them off. Gadget and G2 decide to switch Gadget's malfunctioning chip with one of G2's, in order to make Gadget work perfectly, leaving G2 with Gadget's glitches. G2 defeats the henchmen while Gadget goes after Claw. Claw drops Penny in a go-kart full of explosives to stall Gadget. Gadget manages to rescue her and then capture Brick and McKibble. Dr. Claw gets away in a rocket-like escape pod, vowing that he will be back "next time".

Gadget, G2, and Penny reverse the effects of Claw's secret weapon before returning to working in the police force. As Gadget and G2 shake hands, congratulating each other, their hats malfunction, flashing love hearts, revealing their true feelings. The film ends with Gadget and G2 beginning a relationship, with fireworks coming from their hats, as they kiss.

However, one of the rockets lands in front of the mayor and Quimby, exploding in their faces; they then yell "Gadget" with much anger.
